About us

What art boxes work with Max?

Max will hold many types of art boxes.  It almost seems easier to mention the ones he does not suit than to find a list of the ones that he instantly takes to.

I will begin below with the models customers have written to us about and continue adding as we receive more feedback.  We are anxious to know your experiences.

  • Heilman Backpacker, Double Sketch box and Oil Box are not as deep as the larger Heilman boxes and work great
  • All Dakota traveler pastel boxes work fantastic
  • Roz pastel organizer trays
  • Guerrilla Painter Pastel Carrier works well on Max but you will need to bring a board for a shelf as it uses small compartment covers rather than one large cover which is usually used as the shelf..
  • Richeson's French Companion
  • Any art box for any medium that opens out long and narrow.  Max's arms extend approximately 12 inches (30 cm) so any box width up to 14.5 to 15 inches (37-38 cm) works well.
  • Please let us know if you find a box that works well with Max.

  • Heilman  Original and Large Pastel boxes.  No to these.  These boxes are hinged on the long side rather than the short side making them 16 to 17 inches deep...too deep to fit comfortably on Max.  He can support the weight but the design of the box makes balancing on the side of an easel way too scary even with major counterweight and clipped to Max
  • Pochade boxes are usually too deep with the lid up to work well on Max and would not sit at a comfortable working height but he makes a great auxiliary shelf as you can see in the Exposé Gallery
